Bonn climate change meeting

Sharm El Sheikh Mitigation Ambition and Implementation Work program was operationalized in COP 27 by decision 4/CMA4. The objective of the work program is to scale up the mitigation ambition and implementation in this critical decade. The work program started immediately after COP27/CMA4 and will continue till its eighth session (2026) with a view to adopting a decision on its continuation at that session.

The Program is implemented under the guidance of two co-chairs to be chosen every two years by the chairs of the SBSTA and SBI. It is our pleasure to announce that Dr. Amr Osama Abdel-Aziz, Chairman of our Associate in Egypt Integral Consult, is one of the two co-chairs selected for 2023 to 2024 chairmanship.

The first Global Dialogue and Investment-Focused Event under the MWP took place in Bonn, Germany, from 3 to 5 June 2023. “The chosen topic for this year under the MWP is accelerating just energy transition. The first global dialogue aimed at facilitating a focused exchange of views and ideas around 4 sub-topics, namely: renewable energy, grid connectivity and storage, energy efficiency, and carbon capture and storage/utilization. The dialogue provided an opportunity for active participation and interactions between Parties and relevant and non-party stakeholders. The first investment focused event was a very good start to initiate discussions between parties and interested public and private financiers, investors and international climate finance providers to interact and discuss opportunities for implementation of projects on the ground, which could lead to implementation of projects or programs related to just energy transition in parties’ NDCs and which could also lead to increase in ambition” said Dr. Amr.

The first Dialogue session event included was structured in a manner that allowed effective discussions by the participants by forming breakout workshops that addressed opportunities, best practices and actionable solutions in the first day while in the second day, barriers, challenges and financing issues related to the acceleration of the just energy transition were discussed.

During the Investment focused event, a dedicated session focused on the preparation and development of project proposals and financing structures for just energy transition projects. The session showcased good practices and success stories in the development and structuring of projects that participants can benefit from and build upon towards subsequent investment-focused events.

The last session discussed the regional opportunities and challenges for accessing and mobilizing finance and investment for just energy transition. During the session, regional perspectives to unlock finance, overcome barriers to access to finance, identify investment opportunities and actionable solutions were shared.

The parties and all participants welcomed the first dialogue and investment focused event and hoped for more participation of practitioners and experts in the next one.
